The Queen of Southern Soul
“…Staton deserves to be right up there alongside Aretha and Gladys in the soul pantheon. An album worth selling your soul for…” Mojo Magazine, London
“Deep soul gems too frank and gritty for the pop charts… including a heartbreaking take on `In the Ghetto’ that made Elvis swoon.” Rollingstone
“…Every single track here says more in its allotted two minutes-40 than most artists manage in a lifetime.” Time Out London
The legendary First Lady of Southern Soul and erstwhile dance music queen CANDI STATON is making her way to Australia for the very first time. We are delighted to have the Sweetheart of Soul heading our way and can’t wait to sing along to all her disco hits including Young Hearts Run Free, You’ve Got The Love (recently covered by Florence & The Machine) and her remake of Tammy Wynette's Stand By Your Man.
There are southern soul voices and there are southern soul voices. Raw and ravaged, CANDI STATON'S (CANZETTA MARIA STATON) is one of the signature sounds of the genre. Before disco caught on and CANDI became known for the #1 dance smash Young Hearts Run Free" she had begun her career in the stellar JEWEL GOSPEL TRIO (at 10 years of age) in the 1950's. After her big run as a secular star in the 1970's, she returned to her gospel roots in 1982. Since then, she has developed a reputation as a Charismatic praise and worship leader, a sensitive psalmist and the person who first infused gospel with funk through her "gospco" songs such as Dance and Sing A Song which merged disco rhythms with gospel lyrics. However, CANDI is equally known for her sweet ballads such as Sin Doesn't Live Here Anymore and Mama as she is for her more high-energy material. Whatever she does is sweet and that's why she's called the Sweetheart of Soul.
CANDI has played alongside everyone from THE STAPLE SINGERS, to THE SOUL STIRRERS, and ARETHA FRANKLIN among others. After spending twenty years on the gospel circuit, singing bluesy hosannas, the various new recordings including His Hands (2006), The Ultimate Gospel Collection (2006), I Will Sing My Praise to You (2008) Who's Hurting Now? (2009) have unexpectedly returned STATON to the pop limelight. In 2008 CANDI STATON, performed a rousing hour-long set in front of 50,000 screaming fans at London’s GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL…in short, the sing-along's that are sure to ensue with the Sweetheart of Soul are going to be huge!
