“genre-splicing instrumental dexterity on full display…exuberant gospel-jazz boogie”Rolling Stone

Bluesfest Touring welcomes improvisational gospel-jazz supergroup The Word for a special Australian tour!
Featuring pedal-steel guitarist Robert Randolph, keyboardist John Medeski and North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and drummer Cody Dickinson, The Word plays the hymnal of the electric improvisational church. They don’t struggle with arrangements, and they leave room for each other to stretch out.

Their latest album Soul Food, recorded in Memphis at the home of Hi Records (a studio untouched since 1969, where Al Green recorded all his hits; where Mark Ronson recorded “Uptown Funk”). They’ve collaborated with greats including Ruthie Foster, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana and more, and recently performed at Bonnaroo and appeared on Conan Live!

After a long hiatus, they’ve returned with gusto; their improvisational tenet allowing for such ground-breaking opportunities as embodied on a Soul Food track, ‘Glory Glory’ which is a new sound unto itself, featuring the debut of the world’s first acoustic pedal steel guitar, a Dobro that’s been outfitted with four pedals. The inventor drove it from Nashville so Robert could try it.

“At church,” says Robert, “the music follows the spirit. I have to be ready at any moment to go in any direction to do whatever anyone wants to do. This band does that—that’s what The Word does.”
It’s secular. It’s sacred. It’s certainly spiritual. It’s The Word and now it’s time, once again, to take The Word to the world. Including Australia!
